Modern Cottage Quilts

Welcome!  My name is Katie Nelson and I am the quilter behind Modern Cottage Quilts.

I started sewing as a teenager and was inspired by my grandmother.  I loved playing with her button collection and admired her beautiful sewing machine.  My first sewing projects were skirts and dresses that I made for myself.  I used denim scraps from old jeans to create my very first quilt.  

​

My other love is fine art.  I studied art at Eastern Oregon University and received my degree in Art from the University of Minnesota.  In Oregon I started exploring integrating fiber into my art, eventually moving to fiber and quilts being my primary focus. 

​

I design my own quilt patterns and also enjoy blogging about my projects.  I have previously worked in local quilt shops and taught beginning quilting classes.  

​

At Modern Cottage Quilts, I bring together my background in traditional quilting and sewing, and mingle that with my love of fine art and modern fabric.
